Getting started

Study a deck. Tap the deck pile. Tap a card to flip it; swipe right for Again, left for Good, up for Easy. The buttons under the pile do the same. Undo is the arrow in the top right.

Answer cards. Some cards ask before they flip: type the answer, hold the microphone and say it, or pick it from four options. After you answer, the card flips and shows how you did.

Hear a word. Fields marked as Speech are read aloud when the card is revealed; tap the speaker on the card to hear them again.

Making decks

From a template. Tap +, pick a template, adjust the fields and card kinds, add rows, save.

From a table. Tap + → Import a table → Choose a file and pick a CSV or TSV exported from Numbers, Sheets or Excel. The first row must be the header.

From a shared deck. Tap + → Add a shared deck and paste a link to an .ankipan file, or open one from Files, AirDrop or Safari. You see what's inside and who made it before it is added. See Sharing decks.

From a description. On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on, type what you want ("50 everyday Spanish verbs with an example sentence") and tap the arrow. Ankipan proposes the fields and card kinds; change anything you like, then let it fill the rows. Continue generating adds more.

Fields and card kinds. Every deck is a table. A field is a column; its type decides whether it is read aloud. A card kind says which fields are shown on the front, which are revealed on the back, and how you answer. Tap a card kind to edit it with a live preview.

Edit, share or delete a deck. Long-press the pile on the home screen. Share deck… exports the deck as an .ankipan file you can send or publish; it contains the deck's content, not your review history.

Common questions

The Generate option isn't there. Deck generation needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence enabled in Settings and its model downloaded. Templates and import work on every device.

Spoken answers aren't recognised. Check that Ankipan is allowed to use the Microphone and Speech Recognition in Settings › Privacy & Security. Set the field's language on the deck's Fields page; recognition follows it. Words with several spellings (such as kanji and kana) are compared by their reading, so either counts.

Cards come in a different order each day. That's intended. New cards are introduced in the deck's order but shuffled within the day, and the two sides of one word are kept apart. Review order is by due date.

How does scheduling work? Ankipan uses FSRS‑6, a modern open‑source spaced‑repetition algorithm. Each answer updates the card's stability and difficulty and sets the next review date. There is nothing to configure.

Is my data backed up? Decks and review history live on your device and are included in your normal iOS backups. With iCloud sync on (Settings in Ankipan; on by default), they are also kept in your own iCloud and stay the same on every device signed in to your Apple Account.
